Finished in February: my first beanie! Or toque, if you’re a Canuck.

A beanie knitted up in navy, ice blue, and cream colors. The ribbed cuff is cream. Above this are stacked different bands of colorwork: a water motif, the word KRAKEN in large letters, Seattle repeated around the hat, and then solid ice blue.

Years ago I attempted to knit the Classic Cuffed Hat from Purl Soho, to disastrous effect. This time my attempt to knit a beanie went super smoothly, which I think is a testament to “right level of challenge” for your current skills.

In Winter 2025, I knitted the Base Doodle Beanie from Pacific Knit Co’s Doodle Knit Directory Book. When I was working on this Doodle Headband, my friends remarked that the color palette reminded them of the Seattle Kraken, our local NHL team. With this next project I decided to lean in and actually make the hat Kraken themed.

Here’s the digital chart I put together:

A digital version of the colorwork design, which looks like a rectangle of pixel art.

The water motif and repeating band of “Seattles” is from Pacific Knit Co’s Seattle Deck. I found a letter chart elsewhere online and added some sparkles next to the word KRAKEN.

The back of the hat, with the same motifs. Except on the back, there are little sparkles instead of the word KRAKEN.

This all came together pretty quickly, and I even attempted a pompom or two for the top! I decided I wasn’t quite happy with the fluffiness of my pompoms quite yet (that was a first attempt) so decided to nix it for now. Maybe I’ll try again for the next hockey season!
