in drawing

After participating in a couple art challenges by drawing weekly, I thought I might like to try doing a full daily challenge. October is prime time for such challenges, since -tober is such a handy suffix, so I finally tried out Peachtober!

A sketchbook spread showing two graphic “quilty” illustrations in various shades of orange and purple. Around each set of blocks is a quilty border. The left-hand side has a masthead that says Peachtober, with a peach for the O. My favorite drawings are a spell book, a cauldron bubbling over, and the cross section of a plum.

I still wanted to make this more sustainable than creating a fresh new artwork each day, so I decided to fill 6 spreads of smaller drawings (in Posca markers) that each make up a couple “quilts”. This ended up feeling like an appropriate stretch for me.

Many of the prompts I took quite literally and rendered simply, since I was making small drawings that could rely on each other for visual interest. Sometimes I interpreted a prompt more unconventionally, such as moose tracks icecream for “moose” and a Hershey’s Hug candy for “hug”.

Another spread with the same aesthetic, but with small drawings in shades of yellow and blue Posca marker. These include a Puget Sound scene with a sailboat, berries, a crayon, a windmill by the water, a rising sun, a crescent moon, sprinkles, a basket of berries, and two seals in love.

I went on two multi-day trips in October and somehow still managed to finish on time. For spread #2 (in yellows and blues), I did not take my Posca markers with me on my trip, and had to scramble to do the second page back at home.

For spread #3, I learned from the experience and took all my supplies with me:

Same aesthetic again, but in reds, pinks, and teals. Drawings include a nightlight shaped like a cloud, a geometric tree, a jar full of star dust, a Hugs candy, a traditional red school building, a gingham pattern, a shield with a cat face on it, a glass of lime squash, an Ohio star quilt block, and a moth.

I don’t feel in a rush to complete another month-long daily drawing challenge, but who knows—maybe I’ll try my hand at Peachtober again next year!
